Do teachers in your school district have the opportunity to provide ongoing feedback regarding the school district's curriculum? What procedures are in place in order to hear teacher opinions? Are teachers satisfied with the feedback process? Why or why not? Who puts the curriculum together? |

DeleteMy school district doesn’t have any formal process for teachers to provide feedback on the curriculum. However, my principal is open to teachers coming and discussing with her their concerns or ideas about the curriculum. She has also allowed certain teachers access to updating the current curriculum as needed, such as myself, and other teachers who don’t have a current or incomplete curriculum. I am not sure if teachers are satisfied with the lack of feedback on the curriculum, other than being told that the new director of curriculum and instruction is “working on it.” Technically the director of curriculum and instruction is supposed to be the one updating the curriculum and working with a team of handpicked teachers to accomplish this, but we haven’t seen this happen in two years.

As far as I know the district where I am doing my student teaching has been using the same curriculum since I was a student there and I believe the same person has been in charge of it. The teacher I am placed with and other teachers who I talk to have mentioned that the curriculum has been updated slightly not by much when teachers do have opinions on it. But, even my teacher has stated that there is a curriculum coordinator and no one has ever really had a problem with how she put the curriculum together in the years that she has been teaching which currently it is her 25th year.

ReplyDeleteYes, in the summer, paid teacher volunteers often work on curriculum in the summer. This exercise is then shared with department and team members in the fall. This is my second year so I am not sure as to whether this process works well. --Kathryn Osborne
