Do you think that state educational curricula should include Social and Emotional Learning requirements (SEL), LBGTQ+, and/or Critical Race Theory(CRT) requirements? Why or why not? Should the controversial topics that appear to be dividing (and have divided) be allowed to find their way into the classrooms? Is there a justification for introducing some of the programs referenced below? Why or Why/not? Choose one of the topics below and comment.

Social Emotional Learning in the classroom:
Social Emotional Learning is very important in the classroom. SEL can create a more peaceful education and professional setting where everyone can thrive. Studies show that SEL helps to increase grades, reduce dropout rates and decrease bullying. It is important for the educational curricula to include important topics overall. Children are expose to much more due to social media and schools need to adjust to the change.

Very good articles.
ReplyDeleteCurrently, my school is implementing lessons for SEL and LBGTQ+ in as many classes as possible. The problem is that LBGTQ+ is a controversial issue right now, and many parents are against their child learning more on the subject. Additionally, LBGTQ+ lessons are hard to relate to certain content areas such as mathematics and science, so the lessons are being infused into ela, history, health, and media. SEL is being used in all subject areas and we are receiving training on this subject. As far as CRT goes, I do believe that it is being implemented into ela and history classes, but is not labeled as CRT. With that said, I do agree that these three areas should be incorporated into the curriculum, but as of right now I know they are not formally written in where they should be. These are topics that need to be understood more by staff, students, and parents as they are not going to go away and are becoming topics students are asking about.
