Maria and Technology

As educators in an ever-changing world, especially with the effects of Covid-19 and the threat that we may have to go virtual in our teaching once again........................do you think that school districts should reevaluate their curriculum and change it to include more technological standards, goals, and objectives? What would be the benefits of this and/or the drawbacks? Do you think as the world changes, schools should update their curriculum to make it more project-oriented, individualized, and technologically advanced? Are there social drawbacks to becoming more technologically sophisticated? What might they be/or NOT be?

  1. Technology can be a powerful tool for transforming learning. It is important for districts to update curriculum in order to be relevant as well as provide ways for students to learn. It is important as educators to reinvent our approaches to learning and collaboration when needed. I see both the positive benefits and drawbacks of changing curriculum to include more technological standards. Electronic grade books, digital portfolios, learning games, and real-time feedback on teacher and student performance, are some ways that technological standards can benefit education as a whole. The drawback of this can be students having difficulty learning social skills in the classroom. Technology can help districts facilitate an easier, more productive learning experience.

  2. As we have learned from the last year and a half of school, technological upgrades in curriculum, goals, objectives, tools, and standards are a must. Many underfunded and poverty-level households suffered greatly in education during this time. Learning loss was real and significant. The pandemic has put education under a microscope and those districts unprepared and unarmed with technological tools were "slaughtered in the battle" in education, especially in the spring of 2020. The benefits of upgrading the infrastructure of technological tools in the curriculum standards cannot be stated enough: the population of the USA must be able to compete and be educated in an updated and saavy way to remain an educated society and to be able to function on an international level. The only drawbacks to upgrading our technology curriculum would be if the writers and practitioners of that curriculum used only technology in instruction. Societal needs and education must develop hand-in-hand. As one progresses, so must the other.

  4. I do believe that the curriculum should be looked at more than every three years, especially after what we just experienced. Additionally, I believe the Board of Education in each district is able to add changes to the curriculum under certain circumstances, like during Covid-19. I think this pandemic has made all schools re-look at their curriculum, and believe that by making changes now can help prepare for any unforeseen circumstances in the future. I would also agree that project-based learning and technology are important pieces to add into the curriculum because they help build creativity amongst our students. Most definitely differentiation should always be incorporated into not just the curriculum, but lesson plans as well to meet the need of all learning styles. The only big drawback to infusing technology is the ability to keep students safe online. Thus, I believe it’s important to use alternative tools to help safeguard them like GoGuardian, and infusing lessons into the curriculum to educate students on cyberbullying and digital citizenship.
